AUSTIN, Texas -- Max Verstappen set the fastest time in final practice for the U.S. Grand Prix as both Mercedes drivers failed to post a representative lap time.Verstappens best lap of 1:36.766 was 0.226s clear of Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo in second and nearly 0.6s quicker than Nico Rosbergs best effort from Friday practice. Rosberg attempted a quick lap on the super-soft tyres at the end of FP3 and was only marginally slower than Verstappen through the first two sectors, but bailed out in sector three just as he came across a Haas on a slow lap.Hamilton did not emerge for his qualifying simulation until the final two minutes of the session, meaning he had to rush his out-lap on the delicate super-soft tyres. He just crossed the line before the chequered flag came out but caught up with Saubers Felipe Nasr in the final sector and also abandoned his lap.Verstappen and Ricciardo set their super-soft laps earlier in the session, with Verstappen finding the vast majority of his time over Ricciardo in the middle sector. Ricciardo attempted a second lap on the same set of tyres, but came across Kimi Raikkonen in the Esses and had to mount a kerb to avoid the Ferrari.Raikkonen finished the session third fastest, 0.518s off the pace, but his fastest lap was set after running wide at the penultimate corner. Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel failed to set a representative time after he was limited to just eight laps with gearbox trouble.Nico Hulkenberg was seventh fastest for Force India and looks set to be in a close battle with Williams Valtteri Bottas to be best of the rest behind the top three teams in qualifying. The McLarens both made it into the top ten, with Jenson Button 0.240s ahead of teammate Fernando Alonso.Sergio Perez was 11th fastest in the second Force India ahead of an impressive lap from Renaults Jolyon Palmer in 12th. Felipe Massa was 13th after a wild hot lap in the Williams ahead, but was still quicker than the Toro Rossos of Daniil Kvyat and Carlos Sainz. Sainz experienced two punctures during the session - one on the rear left and one on the rear right - limiting him to just six laps.Haas made modest progress on its Friday practice performance with Esteban Gutierrez and Romain Grosjean in 16th and 17th ahead of the Renault of Kevin Magnussen and the two Saubers of Marcus Ericsson and Nasr.Esteban Ocon finished ahead of Manor teammate Pascal Wehrlein after the German spun 17 minutes into the session at the final corner and beached his car in the gravel. The session was red flagged for ten minutes while Wehrleins car was recovered, but he was able to rejoin the session for a series of laps on the super-soft tyres at the end. New Kyrie Irving Shoes . DETROIT -- Michael Fulmer is one of the biggest reasons the Detroit Tigers are still in the mix for a postseason spot.At the start of the teams final homestand, the rookie right-hander came through with his sharpest performance in weeks.Fulmer pitched seven strong innings for his first win in over a month and the Detroit Tigers homered three times in an 8-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night. Justin Upton, Victor Martinez and Cameron Maybin went deep for the Tigers, who won their fifth game in a row to remain in the lead in the race for the ALs second wild card.Detroit remained a half-game ahead of Baltimore, which beat Arizona in 12 innings.I think theres a little bit of a sense of urgency now, Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said. This is our last homestand. This is the last chance at home to try and do something in the standings, and were playing against two teams ... in Kansas City and Cleveland, we know very well. Maybe I was the only one that felt it, but I felt there was more energy.Fulmer (11-7) allowed a run and eight hits, striking out nine with no walks. It was the first victory since Aug. 14 for Fulmer, who emerged around midseason as a Rookie of the Year candidate but is now having to fight off a torrid challenge from Gary Sanchez of the New York Yankees.Danny Duffy (12-3) allowed six runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out four. The Tigers jumped ahead right away against Duffy. The Royals made two errors in the first inning, and Uptons RBI double made it 2-0.Martinez and Upton each hit solo shots in the third, and Maybins two-run homer in the fourth made it 6-0.Upton has 27 homers on the season, including 14 in his last 29 games.Kansas City has loost nine of its last 12.ddddddddddddDISPUTED CHALLENGEKansas Citys only run off Fulmer came after replay overturned the second out of an apparent double play, which would have ended the top of the sixth. Ausmus complained to the umpires, saying the Royals had waited too long before challenging.I said I wanted to protest, which, even going into it, when I said it, I knew instant replay wasnt protestable, Ausmus said. After the review revived the rally, Paulo Orlando hit an RBI single.ON THE BORDERLINEFulmer is the ALs ERA leader at 2.95 -- his 155 2/3 innings are enough to qualify at this point. Hell need to throw 6 1/3 more to qualify for the title at the end of the season. The Tigers have taken steps to limit his workload, and this latest start was a positive sign.I still feel good, so I guess its working, Fulmer said.
